Summer Reading
Importance of Reading:
Research has consistently shown a correlation between daily independent reading and an improvement in school performance. Students who are regular, independent readers have higher critical thinking skills, verbal fluency, reading comprehension, memory skills, and increase in general knowledge. Therefore, in order to challenge our students and help them grow academically, MCA encourages all students to read for 25-30 minutes a day. Since students do not have access to the school library over the summer, these lists can be used as a guide for both parents and students.
Accelerated Reader (AR) Levels are used to measure reading levels for each grade. For example, a 2.0 represents second grade books, a 3.0 represents third grade books, etc. The higher the reading level, the more challenging the book. It is important to understand what your child’s reading level is. Books that are too low of a level do not challenge or help students, while books that are too high of a level can be frustrating and too difficult. You can learn more about AR levels here, or check a book’s AR level here.
Public libraries are a great place to find books. You can get free ebooks and audiobooks, and check what books are at the St. Joseph County Libraries (SJCPL) using this online catalog. SJCPL also has many free resources, including weekly storytimes, book clubs, and workshops. Their schedule can be found here.
